Countdown to ANH Academy Week 2017: Research uptake - what is it, why bother and are you good at it?
Sangeetha Rosemarie Rajeesh 08 July 2017

Do we really need to make our research findings known?

Many ‘traditional’ researchers would say: “of course not!” But, times are changing and so must our outlook. The ‘Research Uptake – What is it, why bother, and are you good at it?’ lightening learning lab session on July 9 will nudge out the ‘Uptake’ characteristic in you!

A lot of money goes into research studies and there are many publications to prove this investment, nevertheless, the question that begs considering is – has our published work reached the people we want to effect? Well, there are cases where research knowledge has been picked up by policy-makers and legislation drafted, but there are is also a lot of scientific knowledge that remain as published work in high-impact journals – never to see the light of public policy, thus benefits miss society for which they were studied in the first place.

What to expect from the Research Uptake learning lab session

The LANSA-IMMANA Research Uptake session is an opportunity for all researchers any various levels as well as research uptake and communication persons to engage with questions like:

- How do we recognise research evidence that is worth uptake and dissemination investment, both in terms of money, time and dedicated personnel?

- Does the process of Research Uptake need to begin from the outset of a programme or study?

- Does are research team have capacity to perform uptake of research?

- Is research uptake a researcher role at all? Should it not be the sole responsibility of the communication person?

- How do we plan uptake when we don’t really know the results of the research study and the programme?

- Can uptake of research evidence be a strategic process?

- How do we know that we’ve made an impression or impact on policy-makers and society after investing in research uptake efforts?

And, the list of question goes on...

What you need to do

Come with an open mind.
