Description:
Evidence related to the use of Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) to achieve nutrition and diet outcomes is becoming more robust, especially when CVA is combined with other interventions. However, despite the increased use of cash by humanitarian actors globally (raising from US$ 2.8 billion in 2015 to US$ 6.7 billion in 2021), there has not been a concomitant increase in the use of cash to support nutrition. Based on available evidence and in response to the Global Food Crisis, World Food Programme (WFP) has released interim recommendations on the use of CVA for preventing acute malnutrition in children and pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls. The session will summarize existing evidence, programme and operational learnings to navigate the multiple considerations that apply to the use of cash for nutrition. Specifically, the session will outline how to use CVA within a broader emergency nutrition package and propose a robust method to define the transfer value of the nutritional cash top-up that is context specific. The session aims to support participants with key actions and new considerations along the project cycle that are required to ensure a strong cash programme design while outlining critical research gaps.
