Over one-third of the world’s food is lost or wasted, undermining efforts to end hunger and malnutrition while contributing 8 to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. In low- and middle-income countries, over 40 percent of food loss occurs before a crop even makes it to market. During this session, participants will understand the triple-win opportunity of reducing food loss and waste (FLW) to improve climate, economic growth, and nutrition and food security. The session will investigate the similarities and differences of FLW between high-income and low and middle countries as well as dissect the linkages between FLW and food safety. Participants will gain an understanding of the magnitude of the FLW problem and approaches to mitigate its impacts, including methane abatement, climate-smart circular economy, and monetization using carbon credits.
