Description:

Anita Chitaya is a Malawian farmer and community promoter who has worked with Soils, Food and Healthy Communities (SFHC) since 2009;  a farmer-led research initiative for food security and nutrition in Malawi.

As a community leader she has played a pivotal role in training fellow farmers in agroecological practices and fostering equitable divisions of labour and resources among households.

The award-winning film, "The Ants and the Grasshopper", co-produced by Raj Patel, follows Anita's courageous journey to politicians and farmers in the United States to highlight the impacts of climate change on smallholders in Malawi.

Anita's keynote speech at ANH2023 will conclude the conference with a powerful reflection that is truly from the field; sharing the lived experiences of a female farmer; and the local and global actions needed to navigate the harsh realities of a changing climate.

Film screening at ANH2023, Malawi

There will be a special screening of the film at ANH2023 on Wednesday 28 June. For licencing purposes this can only be shown in person, in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Read the official blurb about Anita from the "The Ants and the Grasshopper" website:

Anita has a gift; she can help bring abundant food from dead soil, she can make men fight for gender equality, and she can end child hunger in her village. Now, to save her home from extreme weather, she faces her greatest challenge: persuading Americans that climate change is real. Traveling from Malawi to California to the White House, she meets climate skeptics and despairing farmers. Her journey takes her across all the divisions shaping the US, from the rural-urban divide, to schisms of race, class and gender, to the thinking that allows Americans to believe we live on a different planet from everyone else. It will take all her skill and experience to persuade us that we’re all in this together.
