Description:

At the heart of today’s global food crisis is a fundamental inability for millions of people to realise their human right to food.

As enshrined in Article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), this is described as the:

"right of everyone to an adequate standard of living […], including adequate food, clothing, housing, and to the continuous improvement of living  conditions.  The State Parties will take appropriate steps to ensure the realisation of this right."

This ANH2023 plenary session brings together knowledge and experience from speakers working on trade, human rights, public health and smallholder farming, to unpack malnutrition, population health and food sovereignty in the context of the global political economy of trade.

The discussion will explore questions such as:

  • What links international trade agreements, rules and flows to violations of the right to food in different settings?
  • How much policy space do nation states have to pursue actions that might protect their populations and environment from external economic forces?
  • What do such constraints feel like in practice for populations at risk, including farmers and market actors?
  • What can be learnt from experiences of different regions around the world (i.e. India and Latin America)
  • What might a more equitable and nutritious global trade regime look like?

Chair

  • Thin Lei Win, Independent journalist on food systems and climate change
