Description:

Healthy diets produced sustainably require low- and middle-income countries to a) produce more nutrient-rich foods, b) process and preserve those foods to protect nutrients all the way to the consumer, and c) cut loss and waste of these (more perishable) foods. To achieve this requires an urgent focus on innovation, technologies, policies, and private sector engagement along with rigorous applied science so that governments/stakeholders can cost-effectively scale up actions and investments across agri-food systems. This includes examining and understanding what type of innovations are likely to succeed within the context of post farm gate in low- and middle-income countries, the market system, how to make it fit for purpose and the policy and enabling environment requirements.

In this session, panelists will discuss concepts of innovation within the post farm gate space, present research examining the potential for scaling up of innovations across the value chain with a focus on nutrient dense foods and identify priority information needs and ways forward. This session will help generate an understanding of the research and policy needs to support innovations in food value chains for healthy diets and a healthy planet with a focus on South Asia and Southern Africa.
