Full Title

Designing a smartphone application measuring fruit and vegetable intake and underlying food choice motives – what should you take into account?

Session Overview

Current technological development and spread of mobile technologies, such as smartphone applications, provide opportunities in data collection of food consumption, dietary patterns and/or food choice behaviour. It provides the opportunity to combine multiple research domains, to enrich your data and to overcome drawbacks of traditional methods. However, designing and the development of such an application poses some challenges.

Based on a case study, the ENRICH study, insights in the development of a smartphone application in the field of food consumption behaviour will be presented. Also the challenges and critical moments in this process will be discussed.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes

Participants will:
1. Learn about the use of smartphone-based application to collect data and monitor food consumption and consumer behaviour patterns and choice motivation.
2. Understand the steps and process in designing and development of a smartphone application in the field of food consumption behaviour.
3. Enhance their knowledge on the applicability of a smartphone application in the field of agriculture and nutrition.

Target Audience

Researchers in the domain of agriculture, nutrition and health who are using or are interested in using information technology to digitize data collection through the use of a smartphone application.
Researchers who are researching on data sets that may be of interest in promotion of health diets through fruit and vegetable consumption.
