Qualitative Methods 101
Session Overview
In this session, we will offer a theoretical introduction to qualitative methods, present various types of and purposes for these methods, and discuss their place in the agriculture-food systems-nutrition nexus. We will then introduce a case example, learn the basics of how to design an interview guide, and practice interviewing in pairs. We will then discuss the basics of coding, practice coding a transcript, and finally close with a group discussion and time for questions.
Learning Objectives/Outcomes
Participants will:
1. Learn about the foundations of qualitative methods, the different purposes and types of qualitative research, and general application to the ANH space.
2. Learn the basics of interviewing, including how to design an interview question, and different types of interviewing. Practice interviewing with a partner.
3. Learn the basics of coding an interview transcript. Practice coding and share findings with a group.

Researchers either wanting to work with qualitative methods, or wanting to more effectively engage with colleagues who do.
