In this learning lab, participants will walk through a training of how to define their economic evaluation question, identify activities and inputs, costs and benefits and map these through to a standardized approach for measuring economic costs and benefits of multisectoral nutrition strategies. They will be introduced to a set of data collection tools, excel data entry and analysis tools, and then have an opportunity to apply these to a hypothetical complex integrated agriculture, health and nutrition program. They will gain hands on experience through exercises aimed at estimating and reporting results on the benefits and costs of a simplified program.

Preparation materials:

  • Participants should be familiar with Excel.
  • Participants will be expected to review the 2020 ANH Academy learning lab video or slides on economic evaluation and an introduction to the SEEMS Nutrition Framework, available under ‘Training Materials’ on the SEEMS-Nutrition Training website. Please watch two videos under ‘Introduction to SEEMS Nutrition’, titled (1) A common approach to the measurement of costs and benefits of multi-sector nutrition programs: SEEMS-Nutrition (16 minutes) and (2) ANH2020 Learning Lab: Strengthening Economic Evaluation of Multisectoral Approaches (1 hour, 23 minutes).
    1. If participants have any challenges watching these videos, you can view the PowerPoint here.
  • Optional: Participants may benefit from reviewing introductory and overview material in the SEEMS-Nutrition Training website.  This includes information on:
    1. ‘What is costing’?
    2. About Economic Evaluations
    3. Common Approach
  • Prior to the workshop, or on the day of the workshop, participants should be prepared to download training materials (i.e. One financial expenditure EXCEL file developed for training purposes, and one WORD document) which will be available on the SEEMS-Nutrition Training website.
