IMMANA Fellowships Q&A

This is an informal gathering of users of the WEAI tools, including the original WEAI, the Abbreviated WEAI (A-WEAI), the project-level WEAI (pro-WEAI), and other pro-WEAI add on modules. This is a chance to meet other researchers who have used, or are using any of the WEAI suite of tools, both quantitative and qualitative, share experiences, tips, and best practices.

A conceptual model of the relationship between nutrition and COVID-19 to inform a public health response

Organisers: Andrew Cunningham and Jennifer Yourkavitch from USAID Advancing Nutrition

USAID Advancing Nutrition has developed a conceptual model to help understand the relationship between nutrition and COVID-19 infection and mortality within health and food systems globally. These models synthesize research to identify 1) connections among factors related to nutrition and COVID-19 and 2) where and how nutrition programs can react to maintain health during the pandemic. During this session, USAID Advancing Nutrition will guide participants through areas pf the conceptual model and facilitate discussion and reflection on how the models may be used to inform research and to design or refine nutrition-related programs to respond to the pandemic.

The session will begin with a presentation on the conceptual models by USAID Advancing Nutrition, including an overview of their development and a discussion of the research agenda that the models put forth for nutrition-related sectors. Afterwards, participants will self-select into 2 - 4 breakout groups, depending on the number of participants (Food systems/COVID risk, food systems/COVID mortality, health systems/COVID-risk, health systems/COVID mortality) to discuss in greater detail the relationship of nutrition and COVID-19 within these systems and discuss implications on food and health systems globally. Participants will suggest refinements or specific additions to strengthen the models.

ANH Academy Mentoring

Organisers: Lauren McIntyre and Helen Harris-Fry from LSHTM

Since the ANH Academy community has such diverse and extensive collective experiences and wisdom, we are launching a new peer-to-peer mentoring scheme, aiming to facilitate support and lesson-learning between members. The mentoring scheme has been designed through a consultation process with an external advisory group.

During this session we will introduce the mentoring scheme, and let you know how you can sign up to be a mentor or a mentee. We’ll also invite you to share your experiences of mentoring with the group.

Food security in humanitarian settings: resources and research

Organiser: Claire Dooley from LSHTM

This is an opportunity to connect with researchers and practitioners from the ANH community interested in food security in humanitarian settings. Through short activities, we will explore datasets and resources, and discuss current knowledge gaps faced by those working with crisis-affected populations. In this side event we will consider contexts including, but not limited to, armed conflict and natural disasters. Please join us if you are conducting research or involved in projects in this area, or if you are simply interested to find out more. All welcome.

Drop by for a relaxed chat with Professor Alan Dangour, Director for the Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Alan’s work has spanned the jungles of Amazonia to the committee rooms of UK parliament. Fran Harris is a Research Assistant at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her research focuses on the links between public health nutrition and environmental sustainability.

Grab a drink and pop by for an informal opportunity to talk about anything and everything related to sustainable food systems and planetary health research!

Join for this short and sweet session where we'll give a short 10-minute presentation on social media for ANH, and then open up a discussion and workshopping session. Bring your questions and examples and we will help you think through how to share your work on social media!

The ANH Academy Curriculum Enrichment Working Group has been designing an initiative to support lecturers in teaching interdisciplinary agriculture, nutrition and health topics. During this session we will introduce to you the steps the group has taken, including:

Conducting an online members survey and Zoom focus group discussions
Compiling a database of existing teaching and learning materials
Creating an online directory of resources for members to explore
Planning a suite of new materials to support agriculture, nutrition and health teaching
