Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) Scale: development, uses, and application of a cross-culturally validated household water insecurity tool

Session Overview

Human health is predicated on water. To date, progress towards equitable and sufficient water has been primarily measured by population-level data on water availability. To understand the many ways that problems with water impact health and well-being, higher resolution measures that include data on water availability, accessibility, and reliability are needed. Therefore, we developed the Household Water InSecurity Experiences (HWISE) Scale to measure household water insecurity in an equivalent way across disparate cultural and ecological settings. This session will provide an overview of the scale’s development, utility, and use for research, monitoring and evaluation, and program and policy development.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes

Participants will be able to:
1. Explain how items were identified and selected for inclusion in the HWISE Scale
2. Articulate potential uses of the HWISE Scale
3. Understand how to both implement the HWISE Scale and calculate household water insecurity scores.

Target Audience

Researchers, public health practitioners, program developers, and policymakers with an interest in water insecurity, health metrics, and/or monitoring and evaluation
