While there is a growing literature on the inter-linkages and synergies between agriculture and other sectors, somewhat less is known about how much coherence there is in practice at a policy and institutional level, and whether and how to bring about such synergies. Drawing from research carried out by the Overseas Development Institute for the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation on the question of coherence between agriculture and social protection, the presentation will focus on the cases of Zambia and Ghana. The research is based around two questions: ‘what are the current experiences of achieving coherence between agricultural and social protection policies and programmes?’ and ‘what lessons and insights do these experiences hold for achieving more and better coordination between both sectors?’
