The Conference primarily focuses on the impact of projected environmental change on health and human wellbeing in West Africa. It aims to showcase and stimulate existing and new planetary health research conducted in West Africa, with a focus on local and early career researchers. The conference will bring together global, regional and national scientific leaders in the climate change field, as well as policy makers.

In the face of this critical situation, the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the LSHTM Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health in collaboration with The Gambian Government, plan to deliver a conference on Planetary Health in The Gambia with particular focus on the impacts of current and projected environmental change on health and human wellbeing in West Africa. The conference aims to showcase and stimulate existing and new planetary health research conducted in West Africa with a focus on local and early career researchers.

Call for Abstracts and Travel Grants

This call for Abstracts is open for the Planetary Health Conference 2020 in The Gambia. The conference will focus on the impacts of current and projected environmental change on health and human wellbeing in West Africa. The conference aims to create a platform for the exchange of ideas, identify solutions for research and evidence gaps, showcase emerging research agendas among early career researchers and promote interaction with policy makers.

Abstracts are requested on the major themes of the conference and on any of the sub-themes listed below. Research on potential “solutions” is particularly welcomed.

  • Infectious disease – for example, the impact of environmental change on the spread of vector-borne diseases

  • Sustainable cities – for example, the design of healthy and sustainable cities that are resilient to future projected climate change

  • Direct heat impacts – for example, an understanding of the impact of heat stress on health outcomes especially among vulnerable populations

  • Air pollution – for example, the impact of environmental change on air pollution especially in urban environments

  • Food security – for example, the ability of national governments to ensure food and nutrition

Abstracts should be submitted in English.
