Session overview

In this session we propose to use the results of some on-going research on food systems to provide some learning material around the sustainability and drivers of food systems. The two main entries points for this work are (a) a systematic analysis of indicators of food system sustainability across four dimensions (environmental, economic, social, and food security and nutrition), combined with (b) an analysis of drivers of food systems. The analysis is conducted at a global level. The discussion during the lab session will focus on the methodologies/approaches that were put in place to ensure that the identification of these indicators and drivers was conducted in a rigorous, replicable and robust manner.

Learning objectives/outcomes

  • Dive into the current discussion about food system dynamics (indicators and drivers)
  • More specifically discuss and exchange with the participants about the methodological challenges of defining and identifying rigorous indicators of sustainability and divers of food system at the global level
  • Explore a range of approaches, methods and metrics used in this thematic area, along with their relative merits

Target audience

Anyone who is working on or interested in emerging research on food system dynamics

Format, level and prerequisites

Both plenary presentation and group sessions; no specific technical prerequisites for this session but preferably researchers or decision makers with system thinking abilities.
