Description:

Research on health in deprived urban neighbourhoods (DUNs), sometimes called slums, within low and middle-income countries (LMICs) has tended to focus on infectious disease and maternal and child health, with few studies on non-communicable diseases (NCDs). However, our experience in DUNs in Asia and Africa suggests urgent research is needed to examine structural determinants of NCD risk behaviours in DUN and identify interventions to reduce risk.

We are interested in working together to find and disseminate locally viable solutions that will reduce the burden of diet-related ill health, specifically NCDs, in DUNs. At this side event we would like to showcase some work that we have done and invite interested researchers to form a coalition alongside other relevant stakeholders with the specific objectives to: (i) learn from others’ experiences, (ii) collaborate and write grants, (iii) advocate and disseminate relevant findings, (iv) consider setting up a specialist interest group.
